Fast @ Night
The painting Nighthawks by Edward Hopper 1942 inspired my photo project.

This painting has always created a feeling of curiosity in me. I always wondered what the subjects in the painting were thinking about and was drawn into the painting from the lighting and composition. It was only after my research that I realized the solemn feeling of the painting depicting a cafe at night after the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor. This painting seemed to give a voyeuristic view into the cafe patrons lives.

I hoped to capture this voyeuristic feeling in my photos by selecting fast food restaurants as the modern incarnation of cafes or diners, while drawing in the viewer with the surreal colors, lights, and interesting compositions. I chose my subject of fast food restaurants due to the complex role that they play in our society as the diners of the early 1940’s did, showing hints of social and economical views of the times.

The vision of this project is to also show a contrast between natural and manufactured things, like the electronic neon lighting with the landscaping of the restaurants, while also drawing a contrast between more natural food choices like home prepared meals and the manufactured ease of fast food.

Stay hungry my friends!
